  • New Alternate Reality Mode!  Alternate reality mode brings a new level of strategic depth and variety to Action PC Baseball. In alternate reality mode, results are driven by ratings which are hidden from the user, rather than by raw statistics. These ratings are based on real statistics, but with some random variation. For example, a .300 hitter in real life will usually be rated to hit about .300, but will sometimes be better and sometimes worse. Ratings are generated each time a new season is started. This leads to more realistic manager and general manager decisions. For example, if a real life .270 hitter is hitting only .245 one month into the season, the manager might consider giving the backup more playing time. In other modes, the manager would know that the backup, who may have only hit .260, is (all else equal) not as good as the starter. Ratings are generated for average, walks, strikeouts, home runs, doubles, triples, and durability; for both batters and pitchers.

Report Enhancements

  • New play-by-play script!  Our most popular new feature. The game now maintains a script of all play results complete with inning, out, count, base situation, and score situation. The play-by-play script is available at any time during the game and is saved in the box score file for viewing at any time. Here is a sample from the first inning of a 1908 game:

MANAGERS

Action! PC Baseball boasts an extensive Computer Manager that allows you to easily program managerial preferences!  Build a coaching profile for offense, defense, and pitching.  Program lineups, depth charts, pitching rotations, and bullpens.  Set individual player usage.  Set special situations, such as pulling players for a late inning defensive substitute or bringing a reliever into a game to face a single batter.  These and dozens of other managerial preferences can be programmed with ease.  And exporting and emailing your Computer Manager to other league members is done in a few simple steps.

Our Roster Management tools offer complete options for team, roster, and lineup management.  You can set roster limits for opening day as well as September 1.  You have the option of turning off real-life transaction dates and playing your season with injuries and enforced roster limits!  You can specify a maximum number of demotion options per player.

You can make all the roster moves for human managed teams.  The computer will handle promotions and demotions for computer managed teams by calling up injuring replacements, cutting down to the required roster limits and replacing overused or ineffective players.  The computer general manager will even "call-up" emergency spot starters!

You can micromanage strategy and playing time for each player rather than by team.  Specify when to pull a pitcher based on pitch counts, when to pull a pitcher for a pinch hitter, who to use or not to use as a defensive replacement, who to pinch run for, who not to pinch run for, and many more!  You can even specify preferred left and right batting order positions for each player!

The Roster Management tools let you easily make simple or complex managerial decisions. Manage a team any way you like. It feels like real baseball.

PLAYER RATINGS

Players are rated using every available published statistic as well as expert subjective analysis. Each subjective rating—defensive range, outfield arm, catcher arm, base running, bunt, hit and run, clutch pitcher rating, and more—is essential to accurately translate real-life characteristics of the game. For example, the clutch pitcher rating helps to accurately portray the effectiveness of a pitcher such as Pete Vuckovich in 1982, who allowed a high number of hits and walks, yet had a 3.34 earned run average and won the CY Young award. While he may allow a high number of base runners, it enhances his ability to get out of situations with players on base. We use actual L/R splits when available and estimate them for historical seasons. As a result, each player performs as he did in real life with amazing statistical accuracy.

HISTORICAL TOOLS

One unique element of Action! PC Baseball is the Era tool. From 1876 to present, each year is separated statistically based upon league averages from that season.  Therefore, teams from different eras are automatically normalized when playing each other.

Every big league ball park from 1876 to present also has its own statistical breakdown for every season that it was in use. See how A-Rod might have hit in 2002 if he played his home games at Coors Field; or see how many home runs “The Babe” might have hit in 1927 had he played at the Polo Grounds instead of Old Yankee Stadium!
